somewhere over the rainbow

by: chill

Wed Aug 11, 2010 at 23:10:19 PM MST

Well, well,,,GOOGLE tells me it is Wizard of Oz Anniversary Day. That film includes possibly the greatest American song of the 20th C: "Over the Rainbow." (i use the first recorded Judy Garland version, YMMV...)

THis song, along with what is possibly the 2nd greatest American song of the 20th C: "Rainy Day Women #12 & 35" are both very amazing, reliable and a part of the American essence-- and, of course, they were written by chilkdren of recent immigrants: Chaim Arluck (Harold Arlen) & Edgar Yipsel Harburg in the first case, Shabtai Zisel ben Avraham (Bob DYlan) in the second.

Coincidentally, this day is also "Kick a rACIST Anti-Immigrant Teabagger in the Teeth Day" aas well as the Catholic Saint Jane Frances's feast day. She is the Patron Saint of forgotten people and parents separated from children.

Did everyone forget about this day, too?! No one cares about the atomic bomb, the deadly genesis? geez.

All alone
in silence at the dome,
Hiroshima Day.
A-bomb blast center
no human shadows at all
the winter full moon.

A-roidery

So A-Rod hits the 600 home run mark but I'n mot a Yankees fan so i don't more or less care. Still I was really really surprised to hear and read the reactions around the league which ranged from YAWN to INDIGNANT since Alex's career has been touched by the steroid era.

Right or wrong, we just don't get excited about drug cheaters. Not about their positive accomplishments, anyway...

Somewhere Josh Gibson is laughing his ass off and deeming himself unexcited about every statistic from every MLB game played prior to 1947.

Gibson's Hall of Fame plaque claims 800 home runs for his career in the Negro Leagues.

So, I don't get too upset-- it was the "steroid era," just another natural part of the evolution of baseball in the USA. Dead ball, segregation, the 15-inch mound height 1903-1968 which was lowered to increase the batting; not to mention the perturbations caused by expansion, the DH and free agency.

Sanctimonious blather. Congrats A-Rod yr going to the HoF just like Josh Gibson.

2 outrageous frauds involving celebrity offspring

by: chill

Tue Aug 03, 2010 at 00:34:56 AM MST

You don't get to pick your parents so most of us just try and make the most of it-- including these 2 starcross'd progeny of successful A'mercan celebrities:

Frank Sinatra, jr in kidnapping hoax?...
A rumor at the time was that this kidnapping was an attempt to gain publicity. In order to communicate with the kidnappers via payphone as they demanded, Sinatra, sr carried a roll of dimes with him throughout this ordeal, which became a life-long habit. Later, Frank Sinatra, jr stood in for his father on several TV appearances promoting the Nancy Sinatra/Frank Sinatra hit duet single "Something Stupid."

Eldest daughter of D. Wark Griffith pretends to be Adeline, Countess of Cardigan...
In London, 1922, after the worldwide success of "Birth of a Nation," Griffith's estranged daughter capitalized on his fame by publishing a false memoir in which she claimed to be a descendant of the Earl of Stradbroke. In the book, she says Disraeli propositioned her at the age of 15 and she criticizes the Queen for objecting to the marriage of widows. The book was a huge bestseller-- even after her true identity was revealed. In old age she became eccentric. Relaxing in a coffin kept in the house she would ask for opinions on her appearance. She would wear thick make-up and organize steeplechases through the local graveyard.

A long, long time passed since '79 before I was able to enjoy the song "Rainbow Connection." I still do not like the version that Kermit the Frog sings. Every time I hear that voice I feel like I'm catching a dose of some outta space influenza that will kill me in 17 hours.

suicide is... never having to say you're sorry

by: chill

Sun Jul 25, 2010 at 19:42:31 PM MST

About 30,000 people kill themselves in the United States each year. I think that they're pretty brave-- I know there's absolutely no way I could do it. Consequently, I am quite the aficionado of suicide notes. It's surprising, though, how many of the notes are just petty and vindictive. As in life so in death, I suppose-- but still...

Here are some examples collected at a California coroner's office, from the book Or Not to Be:

Single female, age 21

My dearest Andrew,

It seems as if I have been spending all my life apologizing to you for things that happened whether they were my fault or not.

I am enclosing your pin because I want you to think of what you took from me every time you see it.

I don't want you to think I would kill myself over you because you're not worth any emotion at all.

It is what you cost me that hurts and nothing can replace it.

Married male, age 45

My darling,
May her guts rot in hell -- I loved her so much.

Married male, age 74

This is no way to live.
Either is it any way to die.
Her grub I can not eat.
At night I can not sleep.
I married the wrong nag-nag-nag and I lost my life.

They're not all like that, some are pretty profound.

Product Review: Birthday Party Ice Cream

by: chill

Thu Jul 22, 2010 at 19:40:12 PM MST

Delicious white cake flavored ice cream with confetti shaped candy pieces and a blue frosting ribbon.

I just eat and eat this stuff. It is super! It is like the mashed remains of a child's birthday cake soaking in the melted dregs of ice cream. It's like every birthday cake I ever got to eat at my daughters' birthday parties (hi, Heather and Sierra.) Long ago, back when I could still visit them, I was usually only allowed to come at the very end of the party. By then the cake had been sitting out for a while and was pretty picked-over. The ice cream would be soft. But it was something, at least; some contact. Now that they're in New Zealand with their Mother I never see them. And since their birthdays are in July, right around this time every year I get out some of this great "Birthday Party Ice Cream" and eat and cry and eat some more.

there's someone

YouTube

a potential stalker

Is it obscure that i have a thing for Kristine Sorensen from Pittsburgh Today Live? I only see the show when I go through there. It helps that she's so distant. I'm not going to lie, I'd be embarrassed to have her find that I don't have no Def Lepperd on my iPod. And that --yes-- the headband looks stupid on me.

Stalking isn't funny. I wants to know how this screen name deleted found me.

Jack the Ripper killed JonBenet

Tue Jul 13, 2010 at 00:57:55 AM MST

One more thing about LeBron James, there's been the persistent narrative that he lacks the magical "killer" instinct of a Kobe or Jordan. And more than that, given "where he comes from," he's a good person who might just lack the sociopathic airs that win championships; the simmering whispers that he is soft turned into choral music by Penderecki during these past playoffs.

Well, I think that his decision to go to Miami plays several moves over and ahead of all that. And it puts him in control of the narrative again. Now he has given himself (1) an evil edge and (2) a chance to win a title as a team player rather than struggle on as the one who is supposed to pull everyone else up. I don't underestimate Bosh the way some do.

And this all takes place in the context of Miami rather than the Midwest, quite a different stage. Shrewd, to say the least. Oh, he's such a natural that no one dreamed he would be considering these sorts of things. I haven't heard this angle discussed yet, maybe I missed it.

7 ways the dog cataract subculture proves NBA is better with alcohol

Sun Jul 11, 2010 at 18:38:30 PM MST

Finally saw a good bumpersticker the other day: Life IS a dress rehearsal...for DEATH.

Bumperstickers-- I do not like them. If you can reduce your ideology so that it fits on a bumpersticker that truly represents your identity in some significant manner then you're probably pretty fucked up. It's like when you were all excited to tell me that the original of Brel's "Le Moribund" is superior because it included bitter sarcasm and references to his wife's infidelity that were missing from the English-language adaptation known as "Seasons in the Sun." It's not an awesome revelation.

Or, it's like when a guy leaves a city as a free agent to form a super-trio in another city, to create an all-time team, and you have some passionate opinion about it, something that could be expressed on a bumpersticker or even by igniting a burning home jersey and writing in the sky with fire.

musician advice

Tue Jul 06, 2010 at 22:59:29 PM MST

If you want to get your name out into The Media it is five hundred dollars a month at minimum. Where does the money come from? Say you worked one gig this month, you'll get two hundred dollars for the gig but it'll be two weeks before you get paid by check.

It takes a long time to succeed, perhaps even another five, ten years from now. There are some months when you're not gonna work as much as other months but if you average it out, you do make more than two hundred dollars a month. Expenses are high, too. Some cities are cheaper to survive in than others-- but in some cities you might not work at all.

Then again, you're hardly working NOW-- only one gig this month. Try getting two or three months in a row of good money. Then you can afford to take three or four months off. After the first month you might get just enough ahead because you shouldn't be living very extravagantly-- I'll tell you for sure.

2010 & 2011, Roger Waters takes The Wall --complete and unabridged-- out on tour. We have received these updates from one guy in Europe:

Waters says no added associates of Pink Floyd will be abutting him back as he performs 'The Wall'. The bassist of the consciousness-expanding bedrock bandage is bringing the epic to stages worldwide.

Waters, aboriginal bassist for Pink Floyd, will be assuming the bands archetypal anthology 'The Wall' alive and in its absoluteness starting in Fall 2010.

I accede Roger Waters as the better agreeable ability of the absolute bedrock music movement. I began alert to Pink Floyd at age 10. But I didn't appetite to go out and beef about how afflicted I was as a adolescent man. Draws bigger these canicule and admired musicians.

3 Ways Protesters & Immolation Have Been Involved In Political Scandals

by: chill

Thu Jun 24, 2010 at 21:18:12 PM MST

The word "immolation" comes from the Latin "immolare", meaning to sprinkle the heads of sacrificial victims with fragments of holy cake. It is fitting, then, that on the eve of the death of Carnaby we look back at some of the burning heads upon which sexy politics was sprinkled like holy cake. The connection between self-immolation and scandal is as old as mankind-- but we will limit ourselves to 3 great examples from the 20th Century:

  • Ryszard Siwiec was the first person to commit suicide by self-immolation in protest against the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia. He set himself ablaze in Warsaw before 100,000 spectators, including the national leadership and foreign diplomats who had been invited. The international attention surrounding the self-immolation led to public revelations that his daughter, Bona Siwiec, had been seduced as a teenager by the Deputy Premier. Bona Siwiec claimed that the married Deputy Premier had told her that she must have sex with him for his own sake and that of his invalid wife. The scandal helped to ignite the nascent anti-USSR "Solidarity" movement and eventually led to the fall of Communism.

  • Alice Herz was the first activist in the United States known to have immolated herself in protest of the escalating Vietnam War. She died of self-immolation at the age of 82. In the investigation which followed it was discovered that a she had been having an affair with a prominent pro-segregation Senator. Using this information for blackmail, President Johnson was able to break the Southern voting bloc standing against the Civil Rights Act. Furthermore, the Vietnam War immediately ended ten years later.

  • Joseba Elosegi was a Basque nationalist who self-immolated trying to embrace dictator Franco in order to protest against the fascist Bombing of Gernika in 1937. Franco was so famously disfigured by the fiery attack that years later, when the lifeless body of Ama Lur, a fashion model and author of "5 Life Lessons Learned From A Tea Cup," was found on a public beach, fragments of burned scar tissue on clothes discarded nearby were easily identifiable as belonging to Franco. The evidence led to prolonged investigations of Franco's direct involvement in her death along with sensational allegations of drug and sex orgies in Franco's inner circle. Although, her murder still remains unsolved, Elosegi's act led indirectly to Franco's downfall and the subsequent establishment of a Basque homeland.

IF you think about it, "immolare" does sound an awful lot like "immortal"-- which is what these acts of protest have become; perhaps exactly what these individuals had in mind even as they themselves burned but briefly across the dark skies of history.

A Note From Rxconor

by: chill

Sun Jan 17, 2010 at 02:20:26 AM MST

This came thru the electronic antique brass mail chute with original patina:

Dear NMH, et alia:

Internet's a bitch. I'm done with my howlinghex.com excursions. (I was tempted to make a new username tonight for some reason but decided to let your demological solution stand.) I don't know why I am writing this. I guess I just want to acknowledge the handling of my account. Oh, I also wanted to know if you were in earnest when you said you called for rxconor at one of your NYC shows! Anyway, I probably would have been to shy to introduce myself. I was not at the show. So, I return to anonymity, moved only by the late capitalist structures of life. Have you heard of Fucked Up? Section 8? Elia Kazan and the Red Scare? I thought so. Keep up the good work. Rogue Moon is very sexy. Did I say that out loud?

Love, (New UID)

P.P.S. I am cool with how you took me down. Sorry for the "skullfuckery." I don't think it was intended and don't feel obliged to keep that archive up forever. The tree of revolution must be bent and snapped and et cetera to catch the monster.

Moral of the story...don't send us emails.

May 21, 2011

Harold Camping, based on a mathematical model of the Bible, predicts that the world will end on May 21, 2011. Camping, a civil engineer by profession, has studied the Bible for more than 70 years and has developed a system for interpreting the prophecies which are hidden within the version of the book that he is using. (read source article...)

I guess ALWAYS being wrong about these dates will have been worth it once they hit it right. The comments posted to the story are predictably disturbing, e.g.:

The popular leaders are deluded, and we find ourselves with not a lot of time down on the ground. They have their sweet time to choose us, we had enough time to study the Word. I have something to tell you my son. I just have to wait but can not.

We will be admitted to the house to find that not even a dog was barking. Not on sand, not crack...Jesus came during the night to take her lover to heaven on earth.

Rear door of the Father and Priester cracking short sleeve black shirt. Father wept and folded his hands in his face. Although she is feeling the same, deny I encounter her at home, in bed in the dark.

It really seems to end this, can only expect God to meet you - and who knows what will not deny us in that May?
