I think it's settled and the next thing I'll be doing for Drag City will be an audio version of the book "Victory Chimp" (published in 1997.) So, the score is the text, I start with that.

A lot of things have changed since 1997-- like: 'hook up' doesn't mean the same thing anymore, it used to mean attaching a trailer to some stationary utility source.

At any rate, I have some colored pens and I've been going thru the book assigning passages to various voices. I have posted a few want ads on voice-over talent sites. The first voice I'm looking for is described as an older women-- now I have 20 audition tracks to examine.

I'll be pretty busy but I think I'll post up here now and then to track the progress of the process, as it were. How long will this take?

Will it be strictly spoken text, or will you make other sounds for it?

lots of sounds /nt (3.00 / 1)

Great storytelling can transcend many media forms. From printed word to audio. Looking forward to checking it out.

I looked for Victory Chimp Monday night at Powell's Books in Portland, Oregon. Couldn't find it. So i settled for Denis Johnson "Tree Of Smoke" instead.

I love that book. It's reminds me of this weird sci-fi/softcore/psychedelic novel from I guess the 60s that my parents had (published I think by Playboy...) among their Grove press and Evergreen Review stacks...

You had a couple of reading excerpts up on the old trux website too, right? Just you reading the text in a pretty straight way, as I recall.

yes, playboy sci-fi collections were great! (3.00 / 1)
i've done a few straight readings of this, in bookstores and for recordings-- but the new recording will be maxed audio of some unknown type. I think it was meant to be read to one's self in the back of a 7th grade class-- so the readings always seemed pretentious. I want to find the right way to turn it into sound.

You folks may already be aware of this - but there's a new Hex LP out this month thru Golden Lab Records in the UK (500 copies only): http://www.myspace.com/goldenl...

I was thinking (3.00 / 2)
also that in terms of formal/instrumental experimentation, you'd done a kind of "guitarless" record, a drumless record - various subtractions of yourself or specific instruments from the musical equation - but you'd yet to do an a capella rec. I guess this sort of fits that slot...

the speech will control it (0.00 / 0)
the starting point is the text, and every word in the book will be in the recording.

I dug out my original notes so I want to see if they have any suggestions to offer...(ie: wtf was i thinking?)

Perhaps multiple readers, using a different voice for each character...could even work well with foley artists.

Great news of an exciting venture, (3.00 / 1)
also weird for me because i frequently daydream of a video version of Public Works.

I can imagine (3.00 / 1)
that ambient / "return of the third tower" kind of soundtrack behind the spoken words might be cool. BTW, do you have any revelations that you can make about the process behind making of the third tower record?

Vicorious (0.00 / 0)
so good that the chimp will be audible. That is an amazing work. won't suggest unless requested, but anything I can do? Cats and all, I want to help if there is any. strangely, for some reason, I've a recording of you reading this I believe. where. I'm unsure. why. I don't know. relevance. I know not. but, not mentioning seemed also ridiculous.

An Older Woman (0.00 / 0)
Is that gonna be Gak? She is my favorite, and the Faultline episode the most compelling/"tight" for me. When VC came out one of the main things that stuck with me was how superficial (shady, ambiguous) the explanation for her interest in/support of the scientists' experiments was - I imagined there had to be more to the story.

What are the good precedents for action sequences like this in an audiobook? The Bourne Deception audiobook has someone named Eric Van Lustbader switching hilariously between Russian, Okie, and neutral accents. And the Bourne Trilogy audiobooks are read by fucking Darrin McGavin.
