Pitching a lit class to the home school families I work with that will be half sci-fi and half topics in philosophy. Does anyone have suggestions of: 1) science-fiction (any length) that precocious high school-aged kids could handle, esp. post-70s, 2) theoretical works that deal with issues covered in same, 3) romance (esp. "classic"), comics or horror (esp. "classic") works with sci-fi elements?

A couple (0.00 / 0)
1) Feed by MT Anderson - dark, funny - sort of a George Saunders novel for teens, but maybe a bit better, less glib. Kids with internet feeds in their heads - big themes of consumerism, class status and lost human empathy. Really good.

I'm sure you've considered this already, but -- (0.00 / 0)
Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" sure fits the "classic" romance / horror / philosophy bill.

sci-fi (0.00 / 0)
Rudy Rucker's POSTSINGULAR and HYLOZOIC (or alternately his epic non-fiction THE LIFEBOX, THE SEASHELL, & THE SOUL ... all 3 deal among other things with life as computation and the idea of humanity as data)

Swamp Thing (0.00 / 0)
comes to mind for comic book,
collection #2 of Alan Moore's work
(Love & Death)
is definitely a "romance" and a bit of a "horror"
(includes a trip to hell in pirsuit of a lost soul among other things)
and also sci-fi (origin of Swamp Thing)

so .. good luck!

Ray Bradbury -- Martian Chronicles (0.00 / 0)

not post-70s but... (0.00 / 0)
Arthur C. Clarke's "Childhood's End"
"Scop" by Barry Malzberg

Charles Stross (0.00 / 0)
might also work for sci-fi ...
have only read one and found it clunky but thought-provoking ... have heard good things about his Accelerando re: post-singularity sci-fi

I heard in class that (0.00 / 0)
William Gibson's Vox is an example of technology in place of the body.
