I heard "Lookout Weekend" by Debbie Deb on the weird oldies station here, right after "Tallahassee Lassie" by Freddy Cannon and just before "Rock and Roll Gangster" by Aalon Butler. It is an oldies station that has totally collapsed chronological and regional boundaries.

Anyways, I remember Debbie Deb from a time when dance music was a little more rough hewn and underground-- but not because it wanted to be. Research shows that Debbie Deb was not only just the singer on that tune but in fact she was an auteur, a pioneer from Brooklyn to Miami of freestyle.

However, she was not a skinny person so the record company used a fake DD to promote the records.

Fake DD:

Real DD:

This exacerbated her low self-esteem and so...

She made little, if any, money from her hit singles, and was so hurt by the experience that she stopped singing for years.

I take a different perspective on this, I'd be happy to have someone else have to do stuff in my place to promote things--I'd like five well-designed representatives. I remember when Royal Trux were getting ready to promote their 6th LP and I told the band that only the female singer would be appearing in any videos and promo pix for this record. To my surprise they were pissed off. I could only shake my head. Y'know some people are better at some things than others but if you work together, pool your talents, and share the rewards it works out for everyone. But no...the twist was in the brain, as usual. This led to destruction. I still made good money. Dopes.

Now...Debbie Deb is BACK, by the way. There's been a revival of interest in the genesis of freestyle: Pretty Tony, Lisa Lisa, Nocera etc. She's got new records and is performing live as herself. Nice to see a genius get her due.

I don't know what the big problem was with the two models promoting the music. I think it was a very smart marketing move, and should be applauded. Even given the fiasco, the record must have made a ton of money. Rob and Fab is a sad story; one of them commited suicide. The other one is still trying to have a music career.

I love freestyle...! I didn't even know it was called that until a few years ago, when I started looking around for what I only knew as a "dance pop" style I heard occasionally in my youth -- and realized it was a whole thing, with comp CDs, etc. (But here in CA and elsewhere it was apparently really common on "mainstream" pop radio back in the day; just not where I grew up.) Debbie Deb's songs are, of course, among the best...

Oh shit - just visited her Myspace page, and found out that this concert is coming to town next week: "Freestyle Explosion- Stevie B, Shannon, Company B, Trinere, Debbie Deb"...

Freestyle Explosion report (3.00 / 1)
Well! The show had an early start time (7:15pm), so we missed a little bit -- got there in the middle of Pretty Poison ("Catch Me (I'm Falling)"). She belted it out ("Did anyone see that VH1 show I was on?") -- and had a band playing w/her, which was atypical of the night (Stevie B, the headliner, also had a full band).

Next up were Seduction ("You're My One and Only (True Love)," "Two to Make It Right") and Company B ("Fascinated," other great songs). The two were similar -- an original lead singer, plus two much younger ladies she had recruited as dancers/backup singers (each trio busted out some self-choreographed little routines). Company B was a little disappointing (esp. because I like their songs so much) -- she was the only singer of the night who HEAVILY relied on her backing vocal track.

My faves were Newcleus (an interesting hip-hop crew) and Trinere (the night's best performer).

The setup was basic -- a black stage, spotlights, folks hanging out in the wings. A pair of radio DJs (from the station with the Sat. night freestyle show) MC'd between each act. Some performers had breakdancers onstage, doing their thing -- and also pulled fans from the crowd up to dance. Fun night! (We were up in the nosebleeds, so didn't get good pics.)

The only bummer was the constant Lakers pandering from onstage, but whatever (that's an L.A. Achilles heel in general...)
